Lemon & Rosemary Scones

February 14, 2016 by AHS

Re the visit out to Sonoma County last weekend, from which I admittedly returned with more lemons than may be able to use (unless you count freezing the juice): there was a component that we talked up for the whole week leading up to the trip and then entirely dismissed, and that is the impressive range of baked goods, particularly scones, that we have come across out in said country.  Grounds for dismissal were simply that the lauded bakeries are […]

Zucchini Bread Two Ways

September 19, 2015 by AHS

Since first spying our new home back in June, we agreed that a kitchen ‘facelift’ is in order, and set to locking the project in immediately.  As always when anticipating something I’m excited about, it feels like it’s eons away – when we met with a stone supplier for an updated countertop in early August, it felt like the start date of our project would never come.  Now, it’s a week away!  So in a panic I am baking and […]

Banana Bread with Peanut Butter Glaze

August 26, 2015 by AHS

Why did I bake banana bread today?  Oh, because the heat came on this morning… that and, it is easily the case that having homemade baked goods on our counter helps home feel warm and familiar.  We are getting there as far as settling into our new digs, in no small part thanks to repeated cooking and at last, baking. This batch of banana bread includes something I rarely if ever use: a glaze topping.  Typically I opt out of […]

Crunchy and Delicious Sweet Potato & Beet Chips

January 23, 2015 by AHS

A few days ago, Paul and I were eating sandwiches in the car at the airport just before I dropped him off for a quick biz trip.  Anddd there happened to be some kettle-type chips in the car.  I munched on a few and proclaimed, ‘wow, chips can be really good.’  This message was received as though I had just announced that as the Earth makes its journey around the Sun, our planet is accompanied by a round far away […]

Good Morning Granola

January 14, 2015 by AHS

What’s good about granola is not exactly complicated – it’s crunch immediately adds fun to anything it accompanies, it’s satisfying, it’s yummy.  You can add it to your favorite yogurt, top with fruit, enjoy it plain, over pancakes, add it to cookies, make parfaits, create smoothie bowls, add it to snack mixes, or wrap it as a gift (to name a few).  These happy things all being true, sugars and fats can add up very quickly in some recipes. What […]

Healthy Holiday Biscotti

December 17, 2014 by AHS

Happy Holidays from From the Athlete’s Kitchen!  Oh, and happy new name for my blog!  To celebrate both, it’s cookie time!!  I’ll feature cookies this week and next.  Today it’s biscotti, which I love for many reasons, not least of which is that by design, biscotti is a little more palatable from a waistline-watching perspective than other cookies.  There is little to no oil in traditional biscotti, and you can use a variety of mix-ins for flavor, allowing for a […]

Delicious Apple Muffins

November 12, 2014 by AHS

It’s time to embrace our other Fall Farmer’s Market Favorite, Apples!  Before turning to Thanksgiving pie testing, I wanted to try some Apple Muffins.  I came across a version of this recipe on Little Spice Jar (thanks ongoing LSJ!) last night and as eager as I was to try it immediately, it was worth waiting until today to pick up fresh ingredients at Union Square (the Farmer’s Market there is on Monday, Weds, Friday and Saturday). This recipe is really […]

Perfect Pumpkin Bread

November 5, 2014 by AHS

I’m excited today to be sharing one of my favorites of the Fall season, Pumpkin Bread!  I look forward to Pumpkin Bread all September and oh, how happy I always am when I start to mix up the first batch… which always leads to another, and another.  At last I think I’ve come across just the right combination for a loaded-with-benefits, tasty recipe.   And after some research and experimenting, a little secret. We’ve managed to polish off quite a […]

Carrot Gogi Berry Muffins

August 6, 2014 by AHS

This lushcious discovery will likely remain our favorite muffin recipe for a long time.  My husband stopped in his tracks after one bite and I ate two myself before they were even cooled from the oven. I’d consider this a Rest Day recipe, since it takes a little extra hands-on time due to the grated fresh carrots.  I used a microplane, which is slow going worth it for the super soft texture.  Plus, the recipe makes 12 large muffins so […]
